Intermediate Kayak - BCU 3 Star Skills Training
Are you a flat water paddler who wants to move on to white water and up your skill level? If so, this course is for you. We will take your existing paddling skills and transfer them to moving water. The 3 Star is a prerequiste for UKCC Level 2 Coach.
At 3 Star level you are considered to be an intermediate kayaker and a competent member of a group on grade 2 water. In a relaxed informative atmosphere learn the skills of breaking in, breaking out, ferry gliding, river running and rescues. At the end of the weekend you will leave with a better understanding of and the confidence in paddling on moving water within a group.
The aim of the course is to develop your flat water skills and transfer them to moving water. The course will be undertaken on moving water up to grade 2/3. During the weekend we will follow the sylabus of the BCU 3* White Water (Kayak) Award.
What's in the course?
The course will cover the following topics:
- Lifting carrying launching landing
- Efficient forward paddling
- Forward & reverse figure of 8
- Breaking In & Out
- Ferry Gliding
- Surfing Small Waves
- River Running
- Use of Throw Lines & Other Rescue Equipment
There is no assessement during the course but you will be given feedback on your skills and an action plan of what to do next.
What experience do I need?
You should be a competent paddler before attending this course, holding the BCU 2* or equivalent experience (equal to several days paddling).
Be able to swim in normal paddlesport clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions.
What equipment do I need?
You will be expected to provide your own kayak, buoyancy aid, paddle and helmet and be suitable dressed Hot and Cold drinks will be provided, bring your own lunch / snacks.
Lunch can be provided at an extra cost.
