BCU Intermediate Paddlesport Awards - 3 Star

Build on your experience and knowledge. Successful performance at BCU Three Star level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves an intermediate paddler rather than a beginner.

The 3 Star Award is discipline specific with awards and we provide courses in Open Canoe, White Water Kayak, Flat Water Kayak & Canoe Touring. The three star paddler will be a competent performer in sheltered to moderate water environments and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers on sheltered water. The award looks similar in structure to the old 4 star, but with the skills applicable in an easier environment.

It is a prerequisite for the Level 2 Coach award to hold a 3 star in either a single or double blade discipline and to either hold a second three star in the other discipline or, have the skills to that level.

We will also be running river trips at various grades throughout the year for you to gain experience without taking part in a full 3 Star course or to increase your log book experience. See the calendar for dates.

BCU 3 Star Touring Award

River Touring - BCU 3 Star Award. Are you a recreational paddler who wants to move on to extended trips and up your skill level? If so, this award is for you. The course looks at river skills and environmental considerations so that you can consider yourself an intermediate paddler. These include efficient forward & reverse paddling, maneuvering, support strokes and rescues.

This is a 2 day training course at the end of which, if your skills and experience are at the required level, you will be awarded the 3 Star award. If not you will have to attend an extra assessment day. All candidates will be given an action plan at the end of the course, whatever the outcome. If you require a canoe or kayak, these can be hired for a nominal fee. Helmets and poling poles are provided if required.
