*British Canoeing are replacing the existing Star award scheme with the new Personal performance Awards from the 1st January 2019*

The new award equivalent will be the Start & Discover Awards; an overview is below:

Start Award

Experience your first session on the water; learning useful skills for an enjoyable paddling experience. It aims to provide you with the basic knowledge to enable you to safely get in and out of your boat, make it move and return to your start point. This is your first step into the world of paddling, ensuring you feel safe, confident and ready to progress to the Discover Award.

Discover Award

The Discover Award allows you to develop your decision making and practical skills for a fun and safe time on the water, taking you on the next steps towards becoming a proficient and independent paddler. Learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; giving you the confidence to progress to making your own choices with the Explore Award.

BCU Start Paddlesport Awards

Wanting to gain personal performance awards in paddlesport? the British Canoe Unions performance awards start with the Start and One Star Awards. Get on the pathway to improvement and coaching with the award scheme.

BCU Start Award

The BCU Paddlesport Start Award is designed to provide a framework for a paddler's first session. It is very much an encouragement award and can be the first session of a series. It is an adult version of BCU Paddlepower Start. This award will give paddlers an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of paddling.It is designed for all who take part in any form of paddlesport.

Prerequisites: It is not essential, but it is desirable that all students should be able to swim.

Craft:

This award can be taken in any type of paddlesport craft, including:

•Solo and crew boats of all descriptions

•All competition craft

•Sit-on-tops

•Stand up paddle board

The award is delivered during a 3 hour session, either a morning or afternoon. Session times are: 10am - 1pm and 1.30pm - 4.30pm.

Cost:

  • Individual: £39, includes water fees and certificate cost
  • 10% discount for a group of 4 or more

BCU One Star Award

The BCU 1 Star is a clear stepping-stone to becoming a paddler. Designed as a basic award,the 1 Star is the level people would typically reach after an introductory course of 6 hours quality water time.

Prerequisites: Candidates must be water confident, and ideally should be able to swim (this is desirable but not essential). If under 14 the BCU Paddlepower program may be more appropriate.

Craft:

This award can be taken in any type of paddlesport craft, including:

•Solo and crew boats of all descriptions

•All competition craft

•Sit-on-tops

•Stand up paddle board

This award is delivered of a day from 10am to 4.30pm in the craft of your choice.

  • Individual: £58 includes water fees
  • BCU Certificate fee payable of £6 for members, £7 for non members
  • 10% discount for a group of 4 or more (excludes certificate fee)
