BCU UKCC 2 Star Training

BCU/UKCC 2 Star training Course Learn to handle both a kayak and canoe during this two day course. We will teach you how to be competent in both disciplines to a nationally recognised standard. The 2 star is a prequiste for the BCU/UKCC Level 1 Coach Award.

The 2 Star is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. In a relaxed informative atmosphere gain a breadth of experience in creating the desired movement of the boat and develop your understanding of the interaction between boat, paddle and water.

Course Aim

The aim of the course is to develop your flat water skills and experience in both kayak and open boat following the syllabus of the BCU 2* Award.

What's in the course?

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Lifting, carrying and launching, both kayak & canoe
  • Efficient forward paddling
  • Steering the kayak or canoe
  • Manoeuvre in a confined space
  • Moving sideways
  • Preventing a capsize
  • Turning
  • Returning to the bank
  • Self & peer rescues
  • Risk management

There is no assessement during the course but you will be given feedback on your skills and an action plan of what to do next.

What experience do I need?

You should have some experience of paddling a kayak or canoe or hold the BCU 1*.
Be able to swim in normal paddlesport clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions.

What equipment do I need?

All equipment will be provided but you are encouraged to bring your own kayak/canoe, buoyancy aid & paddle if you have them. Please bring clohing to get wet in that will keep you warm. Hot and Cold drinks will be provided, bring your own lunch / snacks.

Lunch can be provided at an extra cost.
