Intermediate Canoe - BCU 3 Star Assessment

Intermediate Canoe - BCU 3 Star White Water Assessment Are you a flat water paddler who wants to move on to white water and up your skill level? If so, this award is for you. The 3 Star is a prerequiste for UKCC Level 2 Coach.

At 3 Star level you are considered to be an intermediate canoeist and a competent member of a group. In a relaxed informative atmosphere learn the skills of dealing with river flow, open water in wind conditions, and rescues. At the end of the day you will leave with a better understanding of and the confidence in paddling on open and simple moving water within a group.

Pre-requiste

You must provide evidence of at least 3 journeys, including one on open water. The journeys must having been approximately 10km or 3 hours on the water.

Course Aim

The aim of the assessment is to develop your flat water skills and transfer them to moving water. The assessment will be undertaken on moving water up to grade 1/2, following the sylabus of the BCU 3* Open Canoe Award.

What's in the assessment?

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Lifting carrying launching landing
  • Efficient forward paddling
  • Efficient reverse paddling
  • Turning, both static and on the move
  • Moving sideways, both static and on the move
  • Supporting, both static and on the move
  • Entering, crossing and exiting a simple flow
  • Sailing
  • Poling
  • Rescues
  • Use of Throw Lines & Other Rescue Equipment
  • Assessment

You will be given feedback on your skills and an action plan of what to do next if required.

What experience do I need?

You should be a competent paddler before attending this course, holding the BCU 2* or equivalent experience (equal to several days paddling).
Be able to swim in normal paddlesport clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions.

What equipment do I need?

We can provide canoe, buoyancy aid, paddle, pole and helmet if required but we encourage the use of your own equipment if you have it. Please be suitable dressed and bring your own lunch / snacks.

Lunch can be provided at an extra cost.
