HML Award Assessment

April 12 @ 10:00 AM - April 14 @ 5:00 PM

£205.00
HML Assessment navigation

The Hill and Moorland Leader Award, (HML), is designed for people who want to lead groups in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland. These areas include the Peak District, North Yorkshire Moors and Dales, Dartmoor and similar countryside. Being an Award holder is a wonderful way to prove the skills required to confidently take people out walking. This course is an HML Assessment, no training will be given during the event.

As you may have guessed from the descriptive title of this award, it focuses on non-mountainous terrain. Award holders operate in terrain that is generally more remote than that used by Lowland Leaders and not as steep, or rocky, as ground covered by Mountain Leaders.

This HML Award Assessment is run in conjunction with Pete Goldsmith Mountaineering WMCI IML, who is the course provider, number 546.

Course Outline

On the assessment, we look at the your skills for navigation in an upland area, group management, what to carry, route planning, what to do in an emergency and the weather. Ideally, you should arrive on assessment current in the skills being assessed. If you have not been out for a little while before the course and wish to improve your navigation or get qualified in first aid skills, have a look at what we offer in these areas.

Before you can join us on this Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:

  • Have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
  • You must be familiar with the syllabus
  • Have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland
  • Must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment

The Hill and Moorland Leader assessment is 3 days long.
If you are not sure, get in touch with us via email or phone.
