Winter Solstice Dales Walk
21st December 2021 @ 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM£1.00 – £35.00
Winter Solstice Walk – Pen Y Ghent
The shortest day, Winter Solstice, may not be the obvious one to chose to go out for a walk on! But why not go out deliberately to watch the sun go down on the shortest day? If so, why not do it from the top of one of Englands iconic peaks? The Yorkshire Dales National Park has a few of these and we will be going to the top of Pen Y Ghent.
The aim of the day would be to traverse Plover Hill, up on to Pen Y Ghent from Horton in Ribblesdale. We will visit some landmarks on route, such as Hull Pot. The summit is a great vantage point to watch the sun dip on the Winter Solstice and know that the days are going to start to lengthen from then on.
It is a moderate walk but conditions can change quickly in the Dales, particularly in Winter. Dress well for a day on the hill in, possibly, poor weather. Good walking boots and waterproofs are a must, along with warm clothing, food and drink.
We are dog friendly, so do not leave the pooch behind! Dogs must be on a lead at all times and capable of a day out on the hill. A water proof jacket for the dog is strongly recommended.
Bring the kids? They must be aged 10yrs upwards, and, like the dogs, capable of a full day on the hill (you can let them off the lead though!)
If you have not tried a walk in winter, this could be the ideal opportunity. The walk is lead by David, who holds both the Winter Mountain Leader Award and the International Mountain Leader Carnet. The day would also be a good chance to practice your navigation under the watchful eye of an expert.
