Hill Skills Training Courses

Learn the skills to take yourself around the hills and mountains of the UK. Based in the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Moors or the Lake District we will use the surrounding fells of the Northern Lake District to practice and refine the skills and knowledge needed for safe mountain or moor travel.

Participants are advised that they will need to bring the following minimum equipment with them for the relevant course. A limited amount of specialist equipment may be available for hire during the course. Please contact us if you require anything or are not sure what you have is correct.

Summer courses

The aim of this course is to introduce the skills required for safe travel in the mountains of the UK in summer conditions. No previous experience is necessary but it would be advantageous to have some knowledge of maps and be fit enough for two or three days on the hill carrying a pack (three day course may contain an overnight camping trip).

Winter courses

The aim of this course is to introduce the skills required for safe travel in the mountains of the UK in winter conditions i.e. snow on the ground, ice and bad weather. This course would suit an experienced summerhill walker is who would like to branch out into all year walking trips. It would be advantageous to have a good working knowledge of maps and be fit enough for two days on the hill carrying a pack.

  • Clothing and equipment,
  • Introduction to mountain navigation techniques and strategies,
  • Route planning,
  • Movement across the ground including steep ground,
  • Emergency procedures,
  • Access and conservation,
  • Overnight camping (optional).
  • Waterproof jacket & trousers,
  • Thermal base layer and fleece jacket/top,
  • Walking boots (2 to 3 season)
  • Warm hat & gloves,
  • Sun hat, sunglasses & suncream,
  • Walking trousers,
  • Walking socks,
  • Gaiters,
  • 35Ltr rucksack,
  • Trekking poles,
  • Compass,
  • Water bottle and lunch box.
  • Change of clothing for evenings and wash equipment.

If taking the overnight camping option you will require a 55Ltr rucksack, tent, sleeping bag, mat and cooking equipment.

  • Warm hat & gloves (2 pairs),
  • Balaclava,
  • Ski goggles, sunglasses & suncream,
  • Walking trousers,
  • Walking socks,
  • Gaiters,
  • 35Ltr rucksack,
  • Trekking poles,
  • Compass,
  • Water bottle, thermal flask and lunch box.
  • Ice axe & crampons – can be hired if required. If bring your own the instructor will check fit before use.
  • Change of clothing for evenings and wash equipment.
