Canoe and Kayak Safety & Rescue Courses
Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT)
The first course in the suite of British Canoeing’s Safety and Rescue Training courses. Aimed at paddlers and coaches who work with both single and mixed craft groups; it is also the only pre-requiste for the Paddlesport Instructor Award and highly recommended for those under taking the Paddlesport Leader Award.
This course looks at equipment and techniques for safeguarding and rescuing yourself and others in both kayak and canoe. Participants must be able to paddle both types of craft to get the most out of this training.
If you are looking at undertaking the Paddlesport Instructor Award, British Canoeing Awarding insist on a gap of 14 days between doing the FSRT course and the Paddlesport Instructor course.
Cost: £85 per person incl. certificate fee
 10% discount for groups of 4 or more.
Canoe Safety Test
This award is administered by the British Canoeing Core of Canoe Lifeguards and is designed to be taken in either kayak or canoe; certificates are annotated accordingly. This award is an ideal one for the paddler who only paddles one type of craft and wishes to be able to look after themselves and others during trips. It is the natural accomplement to the Explore Award to build an “all round paddler”.
The award looks at very similar scenarios to the FSRT but you are only expected to be proficient in your chosen craft. These courses may be run with both kayakers and canoeists

Paddle Safer Course
The Paddle Safer course gives both new and novice paddlers, the opportunity to develop their safety skills when taking to the water
The course has been designed for anyone new, or relatively inexperienced, too paddling. It is for anyone wanting to gain knowledge and raise their awareness of paddling safely in a sheltered water environment, in or on the craft that they paddle. Typical craft would include kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, sit on tops and inflatable
The course takes 2 hrs to deliver and covers 4 key modules:
- Equipment
- Environmental factors
- Planning
- Rescue
Cost: £25 per person
